This course is offered in English only! The tutorial presents principles, processes, methods, and tools of Concurrent Engineering (CE) and provides a hands-on learning experience by applying these methods to the preliminary design of a CubeSat in TU Darmstadt’s Concurrent Engineering Lab (CEL) on the Lichtwiese campus. Before the core „block“ part of the tutorial, students will familiarize themselves with the design process and related software tools via a preparatory and mandatory moodle course. During the core part, starting from a predefined mission description, participants will derive requirements, define a suitable mission architecture and conceptualize a compliant system by applying CE methods and tools. In particular, this entails the identification of the involved subsystems, their interaction with each other and their environment, as well as the estimation of design-driving parameters. Upon successful completion of this module, students should be able to: 1. Know and describe concepts, methods and tools of CE. 2. Operate a common software tool for the application of the CE. 3. Reflect the structure of a space system with the typical break-down into subsystems. 4. Analyse processes and systems needed to operate and exploit space systems. 5. Map typical technical parameters of space systems into models and implement them in a standard semantic data model 6. Apply CE to relevant practical issues in space system design 7. Analyse the design results and justify the chosen approach in written form. 8. Present the results of the CE process in an appropriate form.
