This exercise class introduces students to standard tools, algorithms, methods and techniques of processing digital linguistic data for corpus and computational linguistics. The goal of the course is to give students a good overview of different types of linguistic data and representation formats and teach them programming skills in the Python programming language alongside linguistic annotation packages to enable them to programmatically ingest, process, annotate and analyse linguistic data. In the course of the semester, we are going to explore a variety of processing scenarios and suitable tools and packages for pre-processing, annotation, query and analysis of linguistic data from both written and spoken sources. No previous programming experience is required, but students can expect a steep learning curve if they have no previous programming experience. Course assessment / examination: Course assessment is via a final written exam. The exam will be an in-person, on-site, bring-your-own-device exam. Your exercises and submissions during the course sessions contribute to your final grade via a bonus system.
