At electron and ion accelerators, beam diagnostics has a critical role particularly during commissioning and the development of novel schemes for acceleration. The lecture contains the following topics: The task for beam instrumentation at various types of accelerators Devices for beam-current measurement Physics and technology for transverse profile determination Methods for transverse emittance determination Physics and technology of beam-position monitors Determination of tune and chromaticity Determination of longitudinal beam parameters Physics and usage of beam-loss monitors Introduction to network- and spectrum analysis. The physical principles, technical functionality and applications of beam instruments will be discussed. About 40% of the lectures are dedicated to experimental demonstrations of relevant methods using laboratory equipment with the goal to deepen the understandings of the discussed methods. Furthermore, the practical handling of performant oscilloscopes, network-analysers and spectrum-analysers should be executed by the participants. In particular, high-frequency technologies and methods will be executed, beside laser-based demonstrations. Exercises will support the theoretical and practical teaching subjects.
